Asm Phase Diagram – The particular alloy that corresponds to the eutectic composition is called a eutectic mix. An alloy having a composition left of the eutectic point is called the hypoeutectic alloy (from the Ancient greek word for “less than”); a good alloy to the right is a hypereutectic alloy (meaning “greater than”). Within the eutectic system described previously, both components of the system have the same amazingly structure.
The difference in crystal structures plus lattice parameters between the α plus β phases causes lattice stress at the boundary between the two components, thereby raising the total energy level from the sample and hardening and building up it. At this stage, the incipient contaminants are difficult to distinguish in the microstructure. Instead, there usually is only an over-all darkening of the structure. If enough time is allowed, the β regions will break away from their own host grains of α plus precipitate as distinct particles, therefore relieving the lattice strain plus returning the hardness and power to the former levels. Several types of such systems are shown schematically in Fig.
This, and other factors, enables complete miscibility between them. Eutectic techniques, however , also can be formed simply by two components having different amazingly structures.
